Yogyakarta, May 19, 2026 — Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta explored potential collaboration with The Animation School, South Africa, through an online meeting facilitated by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia, or KJRI Cape Town, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The meeting, held via Zoom, served as an initial forum for both institutions to learn more about each other’s academic potential, research interests, and animation development, while also continuing the communication established through Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta’s agenda in Cape Town in 2024.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Arief Setyanto, S.Si., M.T., Ph.D., Vice Rector IV for Cooperation and Development of Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta; Fadya Rizka Yudana, M.Kom., Media Release Staff; and Karen Ainun Jayatri from SS DKUI. From KJRI Cape Town, the meeting was facilitated by Daddy Yuliansyah, Coordinator for Social and Cultural Affairs. Meanwhile, The Animation School was represented by Kelly Walker, Academic Director; Bronwyn Horne, Academic Head Johannesburg; and Shani Campbell, Academic Head Cape Town.

Through this meeting, Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta saw an opportunity to expand its international network in animation and the creative industry. Prof. Arief Setyanto, S.Si., M.T., Ph.D. presented the profile of Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta, including the university’s experience in technology-based education, research, international cooperation, and creative works in animation.

In his presentation, Prof. Arief also explained that Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta has experience in various global partnerships and international research initiatives. This experience has become one of the foundations for the university to continue opening communication with international partners, including institutions that focus on animation development, the creative industry, and practice-based education.

Prof. Arief emphasized that this exploratory collaboration should first be built through mutual understanding. According to him, both parties need to learn about each other’s curriculum, areas of expertise, and institutional development direction before determining the most suitable form of collaboration.

“The main point is to first understand the activities that can truly be carried out together. After that, cooperation can be arranged based on the needs and potential of each party,” said Prof. Arief during the meeting.

From The Animation School, Kelly Walker stated that her institution has a strong culture of collaboration, especially within the animation industry ecosystem. She welcomed the opportunity to hold discussions with Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta, particularly because both institutions share common interests in animation education, portfolio development, employability, and industry engagement.

“We have a strong culture of collaboration. We are always open to connecting with new partners, especially from the Global South,” said Kelly Walker.

Kelly also explained that The Animation School focuses on vocational education with an emphasis on practice, portfolio development, and employability. During the discussion, she expressed interest in learning more about the curriculum and learning approach of Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta, particularly in animation and its connection to the creative industry.

KJRI Cape Town played an important role in building communication between Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta and partners in South Africa. KJRI Cape Town not only facilitated this meeting, but had also played a role in opening space for cultural and educational diplomacy through several Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta agendas in Cape Town in 2024.

In 2024, KJRI Cape Town helped bridge communication for Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta in strengthening cooperation in film and education in South Africa. One of the highlighted agendas was the promotion of Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta’s animation works in a meeting with film industry figures in Cape Town, including discussions on potential collaboration in film education, knowledge exchange, and creative network development.

The agenda continued through the Indonesian Film Festival in Cape Town, which featured the screening of Battle of Surabaya, an animated film developed by PT MSV Studio, a business entity owned by Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta. The film served as a medium of cultural diplomacy by introducing Indonesian history, values of struggle, and creativity to audiences in South Africa. Its presence also helped open broader dialogue on the potential of Indonesian animation at the international level.

This meeting is expected to serve as a positive starting point for sustained communication between Universitas AMIKOM Yogyakarta and The Animation School. With the support of KJRI Cape Town, this exploratory engagement is expected to open collaboration opportunities that align with the needs of both institutions, while strengthening educational and creative relations between Indonesia and South Africa.
